Okikurage - Okikurage

A jellyfish of the family Oxygeidae, class Scyphomedusa, order Hataguchimedusae, phylum Coelenterata. The umbrella is hemispherical, 5-7 cm in diameter, and purple-red, with numerous small projections of nematocysts scattered on the upper surface of the umbrella. The umbrella edge is divided into 16 petals, and eight slender tentacles can be seen, one on each secondary axis. The four oral arms are well developed and long. This species is found in warm waters, and is found on the Kuroshio Current from the Ryukyu Islands to the central coast of Honshu, sometimes reaching the Tsugaru Strait. Unlike many other Scyphomedusae, it lacks a polyp stage, and is therefore planktonic and pelagic throughout its life, which is why it is named after it. Sometimes a crustacean called a burrowing shell is attached to the umbrella, which is thought to be related to the planktonic nature of this species.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ハチクラゲ綱旗口(はたくち)クラゲ目オキクラゲ科のクラゲ。傘は半球状で、直径5～7センチメートル、紫紅色で、傘の上面には刺胞群よりなる多数の小突起が散在している。傘縁は16弁に分かれ、各副軸には1本ずつ計8本の細長い触手がみられる。4本の口腕はよく発達し、長く伸びている。本種は暖海性で、黒潮にのって南西諸島から本州中部沿岸まで産し、ときには津軽海峡付近まで達することがある。ほかの多くのハチクラゲ類とは異なってポリプの時代を欠いており、そのため一生浮遊性で、また外洋性であり、和名もそれによっている。傘の上にときに甲殻類のエボシガイが付着していることがあり、このことも本種が一生浮遊性であることと関係していると思われる。
