The head temple of the Yuzu Nembutsu sect, located in Hiranokamimachi, Hirano Ward, Osaka City. It is called Daigenzan Shobutsu Gonen-in and is commonly known as the "Great Nembutsu of Hirano." In ancient times it was also called Kameganedera. The principal image is the eleven Ten-Toku Nyorai Buddhas. The origin of the temple dates back to 1117 (Eikyu 5) when Shoo Daishi Ryonin (1072-1132) founded the Yuzu Nembutsu sect after a long period of training at Mount Hiei and Ohara in Rakuhoku, and in 1127 (Taiji 2) built a hall at the current location as the main training center. The fortunes of the temple declined after repeated fires during wars, and the lineage was temporarily transferred to Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture), but during the Genko era (1321-24), the seventh abbot, Homyo Shonin, took over and restored the temple. The temple was subsequently destroyed by fire in wars in 1332 (Ganko 2) and 1615 (Genna 1), but it continued to thrive thanks to the support of the Nembutsu faith of successive imperial courts and the Tokugawa Shogunate. The mountain gate, bell tower, and Reimei-den Hall were built in the Edo period, but most of the other buildings were rebuilt after the fire in 1898 (Meiji 31). The temple treasures include the last scroll of Moushi Zheng-shen (a national treasure) written by Sugawara no Michizane, two volumes of the first picture scroll print in Japan, Yuzu Nembutsu Engi, and Yuzu Nembutsu Kanjincho and Jodoron (Pure Land Treatises), written by Emperor Gokomatsu (all of which are important cultural properties of Japan). Every year, at the Manbuhoe ceremony held from May 1st to 5th, the Twenty-Five Bodhisattva Recitation Service is held. In addition, the Hyakumanben Daijuzu-reki (a large rosary recitation) is held on the 16th of January, May, and September.
