Kano (English spelling)

Kano (English spelling)

The capital of Kano State in northern Nigeria, West Africa. Population 657,300 (1995). Located on the border between the desert and the grasslands, it developed as an important trading center for trans-Saharan trade. The British invaded in 1903, and a railway line was opened from Lagos in 1912, after which it became a center for groundnuts. The city is divided into the old town surrounded by a wall and the new town outside the wall. The old town contains the emir's (feudal lord's) palace, a mosque, and an old market, while the new town contains Sabon Gari, where immigrants from other regions live, a foreign residential area, and a commercial and industrial district. It is the most industrialized of all the inland cities in West Africa, and the industrial sites on the outskirts contain factories for food processing, spinning, metal processing, leather, and other industries. It has the second largest international airport in Nigeria after Lagos, and there are direct flights to Europe. Every year during the pilgrimage season, a camp village for pilgrims is built near the airport, and many people head to the holy city of Mecca from here. It is home to Ado Bayero University, which focuses on education and Arabic language studies. In the 1970s, due to drought and political unrest, the number of people migrating from abroad to Kano increased sharply, causing political problems. In 1980, some radical Muslims who had immigrated from neighboring countries Niger and Chad rioted, leaving over 1,000 people dead. There is also conflict between the Emir and modern politicians.
