A term used in the music of Nagauta. "Chiri" is an onomatopoeia that represents the sound of the otsuzumi (big drum) and "kara" is an onomatopoeia that represents the sound of the kotsuzumi (small drum), and refers to the unique technique of Nagauta music played with the otsuzumi and kotsuzumi. Nagauta music originated from Noh music and still retains its influence, but "chirikara" is a technique unrelated to Noh in which the otsuzumi and kotsuzumi play a light, detailed rhythm in sync with the rhythm and speed of the shamisen. It is mainly used in the "chirashi" section near the end of the piece, where it is possible to demonstrate the skill of the music player. Generally, the otsuzumi plays the front space and the kotsuzumi plays the back space. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
