Version test

Japanese: 向性検査 - こうせいけんさ（英語表記）version test

This is a test to check extroversion. The Swiss psychiatrist Jung categorized personalities according to whether the psychic energy, libido, acts on the object or the subject, and classified the former as extroversion and the latter as introversion.

The function of libido and personality

Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, considered libido to be essentially "sexual desire," while his student Adler considered the essence of libido to be "will to power." The two men's positions also caused conflicts in other respects, but Jung, who was once a close friend of Freud, believed that their positions could be reconciled by understanding libido broadly as mental energy. In other words, he believed that people who act on sexual desire have their interests, concerns, and attention directed toward the object of their love, while people who act on the will to power have their interests, concerns, and attention directed toward themselves. In the former case, libido is directed toward the object, and this tendency is called extroversion, while in the latter case, libido is directed toward the subject, and this tendency is called introversion.

Jung believed that people who are extroverted in the conscious world are introverted in the unconscious world, and that they have a mutually compensatory relationship. Therefore, to determine whether a person is an extrovert or an introvert, it is necessary to consider the level of consciousness and the situation of the person's life. Jung also listed four basic functions of mental activity: thinking, feeling, intuition, and sensation. He added extroversion and introversion to these functions, and said that eight personality types can be considered based on three axes: thinking-feeling, intuition-sensing, and extroversion-introversion. In other words, they are (1) introverted thinking, (2) introverted feeling, (3) introverted intuition, (4) introverted sensing, (5) extroverted thinking, (6) extroverted feeling, (7) extroverted intuition, and (8) extroverted sensing.

Tropical Testing Method

The Orthotropy Test is a questionnaire test created based on Jung's ideas to grasp a person's personality in terms of whether they are primarily extroverted or introverted. In foreign countries, the Extroversion/Introversion Test was created by American psychologists Thurston and Donald Anderson Laird (1897-1969), but in Japan, the most representative one is the Orthotropy Test, which was standardized by psychologist Awaji Enjiro (1895-1979) and educational scholar Okabe Yataro (1894-1967) and published in Psychology Research in 1933 (Showa 8), and is generally known as the Awaji Orthotropy Test.

The Awajitropy Test consists of 50 questions, such as "Do you worry about small things?" and "Do you like to talk?", which can be answered in three ways: "yes," "no," or no response. Although it is a self-diagnosis test, it can also be used to observe others. Of the 50 questions, 25 are questions about personal introversion and 25 are questions about social introversion. The test is scored by counting the score for extroversion, and the introversion is known by the version quotient (VQ) obtained by formula (1).

The greater the tropism index is than 100, the stronger the tendency toward extroversion, and the smaller it is than 100, the stronger the tendency toward introversion. However, tropism fluctuates within an individual depending on the level of development. Therefore, if necessary, a reciprocity index can be calculated to interpret the tropism in comparison with the standard for the age group to which the individual belongs. In the Tanaka tropism test by Kanichi Tanaka, this point is further improved, and a relative position is determined by the tropism deviation value obtained by formula (2).

リビドーの作用と性格

精神分析学の創始者であるフロイトは、リビドーを本質的には「性欲」と考えたが、弟子のアドラーは、「力への意志」をリビドーの本質と考えた。両者の主張は他の点でも相いれない葛藤(かっとう)を生じたが、一時期フロイトと密接な親交をもったユングは、リビドーを広く心的エネルギーとして理解することにより両者の主張は両立すると考えた。すなわち、性欲によって行動する人は、興味や関心や注意が愛の対象に向かって働いており、力への意志によって行動する人は、興味や関心や注意が自分自身に向かって働いていると考えた。前者はリビドーが客体に向かう場合であり、この傾向を外向性とし、後者はリビドーが主体に向かう場合であり、この傾向を内向性としたのである。

　ユングは意識の面で外向的な人は無意識の世界では内向的であると考え、互いに補償的な関係にあるとした。したがって、ある人が外向型extrovertの人か内向型introvertの人かを判断するには、その人の意識の層や生活の場面を考慮する必要がある。またユングは、精神の活動形式として、思考、感情、直観、感覚の四つの基本的機能をあげ、これに外向、内向を加えて、思考―感情、直観―感覚、外向―内向、の三つの軸によって、八つの人格類型を考えることができるとした。つまり、(1)内向的思考型、(2)内向的感情型、(3)内向的直観型、(4)内向的感覚型、(5)外向的思考型、(6)外向的感情型、(7)外向的直観型、(8)外向的感覚型である。

向性検査法

ユングの考え方を基礎にして、ある人の人格をおもに外向性か内向性かという類型で把握するためにつくられた質問紙法の検査が、向性検査である。外国ではアメリカの心理学者サーストンやレアードDonald Anderson Laird（1897―1969）らによって外向性・内向性検査がつくられたが、日本では代表的なものに、心理学者の淡路(あわじ)円治郎（1895―1979）、教育学者の岡部弥太郎(やたろう)（1894―1967）が向性検査として標準化し、1933年（昭和8）に『心理学研究』に発表したものがあり、一般に淡路向性検査とよばれている。

　淡路向性検査は、「ささいなことでも気に病みますか」「話し好きですか」というような質問に対して、「はい」、「いいえ」、無応答、の3種の答え方で答えるようになっていて、50問からなっている。自己診断用の検査であるが、他者の観察にも用いることができるとされている。50問は、25問ずつが、個人的内向性と社会的内向性とを問う項目となっており、外向性の得点を数えることにより採点し、式(1)によって得られる向性指数VQ（version quotient）によって向性を知るようになっている。

　向性指数は、100より大きければ、それだけ外向性の傾向が強いということを意味しており、100より小さければ、それだけ内向性の傾向が強い、ということを意味している。しかし、向性は発達の程度によって、個人内でも変動するものである。そのため、必要なら所属する年齢層の標準と比較して解釈するための、相対向性指数を求めることができるが、田中寛一による田中向性検査では、この点をさらに改良して、式(2)によって得られる向性偏差値によって、相対的な位置づけを行う。
