An old town in Nasu County, northern Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies the mountainous area upstream of the Houki River, a tributary of the Naka River. It is a tourist town centered around Shiobara Onsen in Nikko National Park, but it also produces rice and vegetables, and is involved in dairy farming and forestry. In January 2005, it merged with Kuroiso City and Nishinasuno Town in Nasu County to become a city, Nasu-Shiobara City. Area: 190.07 km2 . Population: 8,867 (2003). 栃木県北部,那須郡の旧町。那珂(なか)川の支流箒(ほうき)川の上流一帯の山地を占める。日光国立公園の塩原温泉郷を中心とする観光の町であるが,米,野菜を産し,酪農,林業も行われる。2005年1月黒磯市,那須郡西那須野町と合併し市制,那須塩原市となる。190.07km2。8867人(2003)。
