An old town in Nasu County, northern Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies the mountainous area upstream of the Houki River, a tributary of the Naka River. It is a tourist town centered around Shiobara Onsen in Nikko National Park, but it also produces rice and vegetables, and is involved in dairy farming and forestry. In January 2005, it merged with Kuroiso City and Nishinasuno Town in Nasu County to become a city, Nasu-Shiobara City. Area: 190.07 km2 . Population: 8,867 (2003).
