Established in 1987 after the division and privatization of the Japanese National Railways. Commonly known as JR Hokkaido. Operates 15 lines throughout Hokkaido, including the Hakodate Main Line, Nemuro Main Line, Muroran Main Line, and Soya Main Line, with a total length of 2,499.8 km. Headquarters in Sapporo. Has a weaker management base than other JR companies. JR Tower, opened at Sapporo Station in 2003, is performing well.
