1838‐74 Spanish painter. Born in Reus, Catalonia, and died in Rome. After studying in Barcelona and Rome, he served in the Moroccan War in 1860, where he discovered the colors and light he had dreamed of, and his radiant paintings changed the direction of the movement from Romanticism to Impressionism. He was active in Rome, Paris, and various parts of Spain, and had a strong influence on Spanish and Italian painters. He is also known for his prints and watercolors.
