...Germany's sovereignty over this region was recognized at the Berlin Conference in 1885, and the borders with the French colony of Dahomey (now the People's Republic of Benin) were established by the Treaty of Paris in 1897, and with the British colony of the Gold Coast (now the Republic of Ghana) by the Treaty of Sam'a in 1899. Thus, German Togoland was established, but the local people resisted fiercely, including a rebellion in the north in 1897-98. Germany rapidly developed the economy by building the city and port of Lomé, introducing cash crops such as cocoa, and building railways and roads, and Togoland became a model colony for Germany, but the north was left behind in this development. ...
