Japanese: ホタルジャコ - ほたるじゃこ（英語表記）glow belly

A marine fish of the Perciformes order, Percidae family (illustration). It is a small fish with a pale pink back and a silvery white belly, and can reach a maximum length of 20 cm. It is well known for having light-emitting organs, and it is said that the name "firefly crab" comes from the fact that this fish glows when crushed to make kamaboko (fish cake). In some regions, it is called akakuchi, kigane, or goso. It is distributed from central Honshu to the East China Sea, the Philippines, India, and South Africa. It lives on sandy and muddy coastal bottoms and feeds on small crustaceans, fish, squid, and polychaetes.

スズキ目スズキ科の海産魚（イラスト）。体は背部が淡紅色，腹部は銀白色の小型魚で，最大全長20cmである。発光器をもつことでよく知られており，ホタルジャコの名は，この魚を材料にかまぼこをつくるときすりつぶすと光ることによるといわれる。アカクチ，キガネ，ゴソなどと呼ぶ地方がある。本州中部から東シナ海，フィリピン，インド，南アフリカにかけて分布している。沿岸の砂泥底にすみ，小型の甲殻類，魚類，イカ，多毛類などを食べる。
