Soya Hills

Japanese:
Soya Hills

The hills extend south from Cape Soya in the northern tip of Hokkaido. They are an extension of the Teshio Mountains, but are connected to the Teshio Mountains by the valley of the Teshio River. The southern part is 100 to 400 meters above sea level, and gradually decreases as you go north. The terrain is gentle, but in the center there are isolated hill-like peaks such as Mount Horoshiri (427 meters) and Mount Moima (232 meters). Tertiary coal-bearing layers have developed in the central and southern parts, forming the Tenpoku coalfield. The reserves are said to be 1 billion tons, but the grade is low and almost no coal is currently being mined. Many parts of the hills are covered with forests of Abies sachalinensis and Yezo spruce, but there are almost no trees in the northern part due to forest fires since the development period. Large-scale grassland development is being carried out in the areas close to Cape Soya.

Soya Hills
A gently sloping hilly area spreads out to the south of Cape Soya. It is said to have been formed during the ice age, and periglacial landforms formed by repeated freezing and melting of glaciers can be seen. In the northern part of the area near Cape Soya, where there are almost no trees, 57 wind turbines for wind power generation have been installed (photo). Wakkanai City, Hokkaido ©Fam. Kanagawa ">
