The border area between England and Scotland in the UK, a vast region stretching 160 km from the Solway Firth in the west to where the River Tweed flows into the North Sea in the east. It is also simply called the Border. Between the 11th and 15th centuries, the two countries repeatedly invaded each other and fought fierce wars. In this region, with its beautiful hills, rivers, lakes, valleys and ruins of churches and castles, tragedies and comedies about battles have been passed down in many ballads and other poems. One of the most famous is W. Scott's "Minute of the Scottish Frontier" (1802-03), which adds his own poems to these oral ballads. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
