...In the 12th to 16th centuries, there were many lordships, but they later became subordinate to the Burmese Empire and are now a federation of autonomous states. The heads of the lordships, called saohpas, had great authority, and commoners were obliged to pay tribute, serve in the army, and a feudal hierarchical order was established. This lordship continues to this day.
