Japanese: 斉璜 - せいこう（英語表記）Qí Huáng

1863‐1957
Chinese painter. His childhood name was A Zhi, his given name was Huang, his literary name was Wei Qing, and his pen name was Bai Shi, and he is generally known as Qi Bai Shi. He was from Xiangtan County, Hunan Province. He started out as a poor peasant, became a joiner, and then studied poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. In middle age, he lived in Beijing and made a living by selling paintings. He was well versed in free-spirited paintings of flowers and birds, and was particularly skilled in ink-wash paintings of shrimp, crabs, and fish, and is said to have never painted his enemies. After liberation, he created works under the patronage of the party and government, and was respected as "the people's painter." [Endo Koichi]

中国の画家。幼名を阿芝，璜は名，字を渭青，号を白石といい，ふつう斉白石で知られる。湖南省湘潭県の人。貧農から身を起こし指物師を経て詩書画篆刻（てんこく）を学んだ。中年から北京に住み売画で生活した。写意的花鳥画に精通しとくに水墨のエビ，カニ，魚等に優れ，敵にはけっして描かなかったという。解放後は党と政府の庇護のもとに創作し，〈人民の画家〉として尊敬された。【遠藤光一】
