A city in the northwest of Rhode Island, USA. It is located on the Blackstone River, adjacent to the city limits of Providence. The name means "waterfall" in the Algonquin Indian language. An ironworks was established here in 1671, and the first Arkwright spinning machine in the United States was produced there at the end of the 18th century. Currently, there are factories producing textiles, dyeing, spindles, and other related products. Population 72,644 (1990).
