Thin - Thin

The aesthetic ideal of Basho's haiku. One type of beauty related to "sabi." It is related to the beauty of "thinness" in theories of waka and renga. Fujiwara no Shunzei and Shinkei aspired to "thinness" of heart, while Fujiwara no Teika and Nijō Yoshimoto aspired to "thinness" of appearance. Basho's "thinness" is a beauty that transcends both heart and appearance. Among Basho's disciples, it was Kyoriku who most enthusiastically advocated "thinness," and if we summarize Kyoriku's theory of "thinness," it seems that "thinness" meant appreciating "sadness" intertwined with "silence" with a sensitive heart and expressing it in a delicate and subtle way. Traditionally, attention has been focused only on the movement of the heart to grasp the object, but the color of the heart (sadness) is also an important element of "thinness." Basho commented on the poem by Rotsu, "Even the birds are asleep in the sea," saying, "This poem has a thinness to it" (Kyouraisho).

芭蕉俳諧(ばしょうはいかい)の美的理念。「さび」の類縁美の一つ。歌論、連歌(れんが)論における「細し」の美と関係がある。藤原俊成(しゅんぜい)、心敬(しんけい)は、心の「細し」を志向し、藤原定家、二条良基(よしもと)は、姿の「細し」を志向した。芭蕉の「細み」は、心と姿の両方を止揚した美である。芭蕉の弟子たちのなかで、「細み」をもっとも熱心に説いたのは許六(きょりく)であるが、その許六の「細み」論を総合すると、「細み」とは、「閑寂」と絡み合った「悲しび」を、繊細な心で味わい、繊細微妙に表現することをいったようである。従来、対象を把握する心の動きのみが注目されてきたが、心の色合い（悲しび）も、また「細み」の重要な要素である。芭蕉は、路通(ろつう)の「鳥共も寝入(ねいり)て居(ゐ)るかよごの海」の句を、「此(この)句細みあり」（去来抄）と評している。
