A genus in the Apocynaceae family. A succulent shrub with pink oleander-like thick-petaled flowers at the ends of its branches, but is poisonous. It is grown in pots or in the ground, and in tropical regions is planted in gardens and along tree-lined avenues as a flowering tree. There are about 10 known species in the genus Adenium, but the main species cultivated is A. obesum Balf. (desert rose) (illustration), native to the southern Arabian Peninsula. The leaves are elliptical, slightly spreading toward the tip, with a rounded tip. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
