The name of Echizen Province since ancient times, the former Asuwa District is part of Miyama Town, Asuwa District, Fukui Prefecture (now Fukui City) and part of Fukui City. In addition to the district name, there are other place names such as Asuwa River, Asuwa Mountain, Asuwa Mikuriya, and Asuwa Prefecture. Ancient Asuwa District was located slightly north of Echizen Province, and included Yoshida District, which was separated by the Kamakura period. Its main area was the Fukui Plain, and the district name first appeared in the 731 Echizen Province Tax Register. The Wamyō Ruijūshō reads it as 'Asuwa'. It was developed early on, with the Asuwayama burial mounds on Asuwa Mountain, and the Chimori Manor and Kusooki Manor estates of Todaiji Temple established on the plains. In the Middle Ages, the northwestern part of the county was called Asuwa Kita-gun and the southeastern part was Asuwa Minami-gun, but in 1664 they were reverted to their original names. Asuwa Mikuriya was the territory of Ise Jingu Shrine and corresponds to the area around Fukui Castle in early modern times. The Shinposho states that "The Naiku Asuwa Mikuriya had 7 pieces of silk in its upper portion, 20 pieces in its lower portion, and 180 tsubo of silk." In early modern times, Asuwa County was mostly the territory of the Fukui Domain. When the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established in 1871, Asuwa Prefecture was established for a time. Mt. Asuwa was originally called Mt. Kida and Mt. Atago, and on the mountain stands Asuwa Shrine, a shrine listed in the Engishiki that bears the name of the county. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
