1838‐1922 American businessman. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After working as a bookseller and clothing salesman, he opened Brown, Wanamaker & Co., a men's clothing store, in 1861 with his brother-in-law Nathan Brown. After Brown's death in 1868, he founded John Wanamaker & Co. the following year and expanded the company to become the largest men's clothing retailer in the country. In 1875, he purchased a freight yard of the Pennsylvania Railroad and began operating a department store, a new style of store that brought a variety of specialty shops under one roof.
