A group of lakes and ponds in the northern foot of the Shirakami Mountains in southwestern Aomori Prefecture. About 30 lakes and ponds, including Hakkei-no-ike, Koshi-kuchi-no-ike, Naka-no-ike, Ochi-kuchi-no-ike, Ketoba-no-ike, Ao-ike, and Higurashi-no-ike, are scattered on a plateau at an altitude of 150 to 250 meters, about 5 kilometers east of the coastline of Iwasaki, Fukaura-machi, Nishitsugaru-gun. The name Juniko (Twelve Lakes) is said to have been given because there are 12 lakes and ponds with an area of over 10,000 square meters, or because the 12 lakes and ponds can be seen from the top of Kuzureyama (940 meters) in the east, but this is not certain. The lakes were formed when the river water was dammed up by the collapse of the surrounding soft tuff. Covered by broadleaf trees such as beech and oak, there are hiking trails around the lakes. Along with the cliffs and Japanese Canyon in the west of Juniko, it is part of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park. There is a bus service from Juniko Station on the JR Gono Line. [Hiroshi Yokoyama] "Juniko" is the general name for the group of lakes and marshes located at the northern foot of the Shirakami Mountains. Part of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park, it shows mysterious beauty in every season. The photo shows Aoike Pond.
