A domestic dog originating from the United States. One of the few dog breeds native to the United States, it was developed in the late 19th century in the Boston area by crossbreeding a bulldog and a French bulldog with some small terrier blood. It was bred to have desirable characteristics, aiming to be a cheerful, agile, and active small dog. It has large, round eyes, a short muzzle, and smooth, short fur that is black or brindle in color, with the muzzle, bridge of the nose, top of the head, neck, chest, and extremities colored pure white, forming the so-called Boston mark.

原産地がアメリカの家庭犬。数少ないアメリカ原産の犬種の一つで，ボストンを中心とする地域で19世紀後半に，ブルドッグとフレンチ･ブルドッグの交雑種を基礎に，小型テリア種の血液を採り入れて作出された。性格が朗らかで機敏な活動的小型犬を目標に，望ましい形質を集めて育種された犬種である。目は真ん丸で大きく，口吻（こうふん）は短く，滑らかで短い被毛は黒またはブリンドル(虎毛)の地色に，口吻，鼻梁（びりよう）から頭頂，頸まわり，胸前，四肢端が純白で彩られ，いわゆるボストン･マークを形成している。
