Japanese: oar

...a tool for rowing a boat. There are two types: a paddle, which is supported by both hands and used to row the water, and an oar, which has a fulcrum (oar seat, clutch) on the rear side. Boats with oars have already been depicted on ancient Egyptian murals, and oars have been excavated in Japan along with dugout canoes from the Jomon period.

...the word sculling is used to distinguish between the sculling method, in which one person rows with two oars. The rower is called an oarsman, and in the case of sculling, a sculler. The reason why boat and yacht competitions are sometimes called regattas is because of the Venetian gondola races.
