An ancient Germanic tribe. In the 2nd century BC, they moved south from Himmelland on the Jutland Peninsula, crossed the Elbe River, and defeated the Roman army at Noreia in Noricum. Together with the Teutonic tribes, they invaded Gaul and won battle after battle. In particular, they defeated 80,000 Roman troops at the Battle of Arausio in 105 BC, shocking Rome, which was preoccupied with the Jugurthine War in Numidia at the time. They invaded the Iberian Peninsula, returned to Gaul, and then broke away from the Teutonic tribes. They were defeated one by one by the army of G. Marius in 101 BC.
