Ammonium Sulfate - Ammonium Sulfate

Ammonium Sulfate - Ammonium Sulfate
Its chemical formula is (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 . Its specific gravity is 1.77, and its melting point is 513°C (in a sealed tube). It is also called ammonium sulfate. It is a colorless crystal that dissolves easily in water. When heated in air, it begins to decompose at 120°C and melts at 357°C, releasing ammonia. It is a typical nitrogen fertilizer. It is fast acting, but after the nitrogen is absorbed, sulfate ions remain as free sulfuric acid and calcium sulfate, which acidifies the soil, so urea is now used in greater quantities. Ammonium sulfate is divided into synthetic ammonium sulfate, recovered ammonium sulfate, and by-product ammonium sulfate according to the difference in the source of ammonia supply. Synthetic ammonium sulfate is the most common, obtained by neutralizing synthetic ammonia with sulfuric acid. It can also be synthesized using gypsum and sulfurous acid gas. Recovered ammonium sulfate is recovered from waste liquids during the production of caprolactam, a raw material for nylon. By-product ammonium sulfate is obtained by absorbing ammonia, a by-product of coal dry distillation at steelworks, into sulfuric acid, and is produced in small quantities. →Ammonia sulfate industry →Related items Acid fertilizer | Lime nitrogen | Compost | Nitrogen fertilizer
