Norwegian elkhound (species)

Japanese: ノルウェジアン･エルクハウンド[種]（英語表記）Norwegian elkhound

A hunting dog that originated in Norway. Along with the Sulky, this dog is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, and is said to have existed in Scandinavia for several thousand years before Christ. As the name suggests, the dog was used to hunt elk, which live from Northern Europe to Asia. It has also been used for bear and wolf hunting, and has also been used as an all-purpose dog as a sheepdog, family dog, guard dog, and military dog. It has a bold, patient, and gentle temperament. It stands about 45 to 52 cm tall, has triangular upright ears, and a thick, curled tail, making it very similar to medium-sized Japanese dogs.

原産地がノルウェーの獣猟犬。このイヌはサルキーとともに世界最古の犬種で，スカンジナビア地方では紀元前数千年の昔から存在したといわれる。犬種名のとおり北ヨーロッパからアジアに生息するヘラジカ猟に活躍した。クマやオオカミ猟にも使われ，また万能犬として牧羊犬，家庭犬，警備犬，軍用犬にも利用されてきた。性格は大胆で忍耐強く，温和でもある。体高は約45～52cm，三角形の立ち耳，太い巻尾で中型日本犬によく似ている。
