(Napoléon)[1][一] (Napoléon I, Napoléon Bonaparte ━Bonaparte) I. Emperor of the French (reigned 1804-15 ). Born in Corsica. After participating in the French Revolution as an artillery officer, he rose to prominence and became First Consul in 1799, paving the way for military dictatorship. He established a new constitution, compiled the Napoleonic Code, and reformed various systems, and then ascended to the throne in 1804 and established the First Empire. He then conquered Europe, but failed in the Continental Blockade of Britain and the Russian Expedition in 1812, leading to his abdication in 1814. He was exiled to the island of Elba. He returned to France in 1815 and achieved the so-called "Hundred Days," but was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo and exiled to the island of Saint Helena, where he died. After the collapse of the First Empire, he went into exile, and after the February Revolution, he returned and was elected president. In 1852, he became emperor and established the Second Empire. He promoted foreign policies such as the Crimean War and the Italian invasion.
