...Eastern Cameroon was granted autonomy in 1957, and achieved independence as the Republic of Cameroon in January 1960. Western Cameroon divided into northern and southern Cameroon and held a referendum, which resulted in the northern part merging with Nigeria, while the southern part gained independence in October 1961, and at the same time formed the Federal Republic of Cameroon together with the Republic of Cameroon. The first president of this federation was Ahmadou Ahidjo (1924-1989) of Eastern Cameroon, and JN Foncha of Western Cameroon was elected vice-president. In addition, the allocation of seats in the National Assembly was 40 for the Eastern Cameroon and 10 for the Western Cameroon, giving the Eastern Cameroon an advantage, reflecting the difference in area and population. ...
