...Many musicians from Italy and other Western European countries were employed to perform at the Russian court and the boyars and to teach Russian musicians. In the last quarter of the 18th century, Russian composers such as Vasili Alekseevich Pashkevich (c. 1742-97), Evstignei Ipatovich Fomin (1761-1800), Bortniansky, Ivan Evstaf'evich Khandoshkin (c. 1747-1804), and Maksim Sozontovich Berezovskii (1745-77) produced many excellent works of Russian opera, chamber music, and religious music.
