Single-mother/single-father households

Japanese: 母子家庭･父子家庭 - ぼしかていふしかてい

Generally, for minor children, it refers to a family that lacks a father or mother, respectively. According to a 1978 survey by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, there were approximately 630,000 single-mother households nationwide, of which 49.9% were due to death and 50.1% were due to separation. A similar survey in 1952 found that of the 690,000 single-mother households, 85% were due to death, due to a significant proportion of single-mother households that were war survivors. However, in recent years, due to factors such as an increase in divorces, the number of single-mother households that lack separation is gradually increasing.
