Ryujin [Village] - Ryujin

Japanese: 竜神[村] - りゅうじん

A village in Hidaka County, central eastern Wakayama Prefecture. Population 4,642 (1995). It borders Totsukawa Village, Yoshino County, Nara Prefecture to the east, and most of the village area is mountain forest. To the north stands Mt. Gomadan (1,372m), the highest peak in the prefecture, and the Hidaka River, which originates from the mountain, runs through the center of the village. Blessed with fertile soil and a warm, rainy climate, forestry, mainly cedar and cypress, and shiitake mushroom cultivation are carried out. Ryujin Onsen, which gushes out from the Hidaka River valley, is a 49°C sodium bicarbonate spring. It is said that En no Gyoja discovered the hot spring, and Kukai recommended it to the public after receiving a revelation in a dream from Nanda Dragon King.

和歌山県中央東部，日高郡の村。人口4642(1995)。東は奈良県吉野郡十津川村に接し，村域のほとんどが山林である。北部に県下最高峰の護摩壇（ごまだん）山(1372m)がそびえ，同山に発する日高川が中央を貫流する。肥沃な土壌と温暖多雨の気候にめぐまれ，杉，ヒノキを中心とする林業やシイタケ栽培が行われる。日高川の渓谷に湧出する竜神温泉は49℃の重曹泉。役行者（えんのぎようじや）が開き，空海が難陀竜王の夢告により衆人に勧めた温泉という伝えがある。
