Elastic thread. Synthetic fiber thread is twisted tightly to give it flexibility. Traditionally, when great flexibility was required, covered thread with a rubber core was used, but today polyurethane spandex is widely used for women's underwear and sportswear. For everyday clothing such as sweaters that require comfort, nylon or polyester fibers are heat-shrunk to give them flexibility, and used alone or in blends with wool.

伸縮性のある糸のこと。合成繊維の糸に強いよりをかけることで屈曲をつけ，伸縮性をもたせている。大きい伸縮性の必要な場合，従来はゴムを芯(しん)にした被覆糸を用いたが，今日ではポリウレタン系のスパンデックスが婦人用下着，スポーツ衣料などに広く使われる。またセーターなど楽な着心地を要求される日常衣料には，ナイロンやポリエステル繊維などを熱セットで縮み加工を施して伸縮性をもたせたものが，単独または羊毛などとの混紡で使用される。
