Japanese: トビズムカデ（英語表記）Subspinipes mutilans scolopendra

A subspecies of the Centipede family, it is the largest centipede in Japan, with some reaching a body length of 15 cm (illustration). Its head is dark brown (auburn) with four simple eyes on each side. The body segments have 21 pairs of legs, and the dorsal plates are dark green with a black tinge. The legs are yellow or light brown. It is found from Aomori to Okinawa, and when people say centipede, they are usually referring to this or the closely related S. s . japonica . It lives in forest soil, but in rural and suburban residential areas, it often invades people's homes, causing fear.

オオムカデ科の1亜種で，日本で最大のムカデで体長15cmになるものがある（イラスト）。頭は濃褐色(とび色)で，両側に各4個ずつの単眼がある。胴節は21対の歩肢をもち，背板は黒色を帯びた暗緑色。歩肢は黄色か淡褐色。青森～沖縄に分布し，ムカデというとこれか近縁のアオズムカデS.s.japonicaをさすことが多い。森林の土壌に生息しているが，農村や郊外住宅地では人家内にもしばしば侵入し，恐怖感を与える。
