German philosopher and Indian philosopher. Professor of philosophy at the University of Kiel. He studied Greek classics with Nietzsche, and later studied Kant, and was greatly influenced by Schopenhauer's philosophy of "will". He devoted his life to the study of Indian philosophy and philology, which was just beginning to emerge at the time, publishing a series of outstanding works and building the foundations of European Indian studies. In particular, his works such as "The Sixty Upanishads" and "Philosophical Poetry of the Mahabharata" are still widely read today. He also completed two volumes of "History of General Philosophy" (1894-1917), the first of which covers Indian philosophy in three parts and Western philosophy in three parts in the second volume, making him the first person in the world to pioneer comparative thought.
