Vladimir Germanovich Bogoraz

1865‐1936
Soviet ethnologist and linguist. Also known as Tan Bogoraz. He joined the Narodnik "People's Will" movement early on, and in 1889 was exiled to the Kolyma region of Siberia, where he spent over ten years. From 1994 to 1996, he participated in an academic research team on the ethnic groups of Northeast Asia, mainly the Chukchi, from 1900 to 1902. From 1918 onwards, he worked at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in Leningrad, and in 1921 he became a professor at Leningrad University, and in 1932 he became director of the Museum of the History of Religion of the USSR.

ソ連邦の民族学者，言語学者。タン･ボゴラスTan‐Bogorazとも名のった。早くからナロードニキの〈人民の意志〉派の運動に加わって，1889年シベリアのコリマ地方に流刑になり，10年余を同地で過ごした。94‐96年，1900‐02年チュクチ族を中心とする北東アジア諸民族の学術調査団に参加。18年以降はレニングラードの人類学･民族学博物館に勤め，21年レニングラード大学教授，32年ソ連邦宗教史博物館館長に就任した。
