...As the Demirel government was unable to handle this situation, on March 12, 1971, the military sent an ultimatum to President Cevdet Sunay (a former military officer) demanding Demirel's resignation (a "coup by letter") and installed a moderate reformist, Nihat Erim (a former professor at Istanbul University), in power. Nevertheless, throughout the 1970s, Turkey's political situation was unstable, with governments changing 13 times in 10 years. During this time, Demirel's Justice Party and the Republican People's Party led by the young leader Ecevit (a former journalist) who replaced İnönü remained in a state of stalemate, so the Nationalist Action Party and the National Salvation Party (the successor to the National Order Party, led by Erbakan) played an important role as the casting vote.
