Shen Weijing

Year of birth: Unknown. A military man in the late Ming dynasty. His Chinese reading is "Chen Wei-ching". He is said to have been from Jiaxing (Zhejiang Province), but is also said to have been from Fujian Province. During the Bunroku Invasion (1592), he served under Li Rusong as a guerrilla general. He conspired with Konishi Yukinaga and others to send a false peace envoy (Naito Joan) to the Ming Emperor during peace negotiations with Japan in Pyongyang and Seoul. As a result, in 1596 (Keicho 1), he came to Japan as a deputy to the official Ming investiture envoy (an envoy conveying that Toyotomi Hideyoshi would be crowned King of Japan) and met with Hideyoshi, but the deception was discovered and the negotiations broke down, ushering in the Keicho Invasion (1597). He was arrested in the Ming Dynasty the following year and executed by beheading. 明代後期の軍人。中国語読み「チェン・ウェイチン」。嘉興(浙江省)の人とされるが,福建省の人ともいわれる。文禄の役(1592)の際,遊撃将軍として李如松の配下になる。平壌,ソウルで日本との和議交渉に当たり,小西行長らと謀り,偽の講和使(内藤如安)を明皇帝に遣す。その結果,慶長1(1596)年,明の正式な冊封使(豊臣秀吉を日本国王に封じることを伝える使節)の副使として来日,秀吉と会見するが,偽装工作が露見して交渉は決裂し,慶長の役(1597)に突入する。翌年,明朝に逮捕され,斬刑に処された。文禄の役の講和交渉に明側代表として画策した人物であった。<参考文献>北島万次『朝鮮日々記・高麗日記』『豊臣政権の対外認識と朝鮮侵略』
