Wozzeck (English spelling)

An opera composed by Alban Berg. Three acts. The composer himself rearranged the original work "Woyzeck" (1837, unfinished) by Georg Büchner to create the libretto. Set in a small German village where the army is stationed in the early 19th century, the timid and helpless barber-turned-soldier Woyzeck is scorned by those around him, betrayed by his mistress, and finally kills her and then takes his own life. Berg used atonal techniques to brilliantly turn the dark drama of oppressed humanity into music, making it one of the most representative operas of the 20th century. Although the work aims for a strict and precise structure, with different forms for each scene (Suit in Act 1, Scene 1, Rhapsody in Scene 2, March and Lullaby in Scene 3), the expression has a strong vitality in both the lyrical and dramatic scenes. The libretto was completed in 1917, the composition completed in 1920, and it premiered in Berlin in 1925. Its Japanese premiere was at the Deutsche Opera Berlin in 1963 (Showa 38).

アルバン・ベルク作曲のオペラ。3幕。ゲオルク・ビュヒナーの原作『ウォイツェック』（1837、未完）を作曲者自身が再編して台本を作成した。19世紀初頭、軍隊の駐屯するドイツの小さな村を舞台に、小心で無力な理髪師あがりの一兵卒ウォツェックが、周囲からはさげすまれ、情婦にも裏切られ、ついには彼女を殺して自らも命を絶つ悲劇。ベルクは無調手法を用いて、抑圧された人間の暗いドラマをみごとに音楽化し、20世紀を代表するオペラに仕立て上げた。第1幕第1場は組曲、第2場はラプソディー、第3場は行進曲と子守歌、と各場面に異なる形式を配し、厳格緻密(ちみつ)な構造を志向しているにもかかわらず、その表現は叙情的な場面でも劇的な場面でも、強烈な生命力をもっているのである。1917年台本完成、20年作曲完了、25年ベルリンで初演された。日本初演は63年（昭和38）ベルリン・ドイツオペラ。
