Kikuchi River

A river that flows through northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It originates on the northwestern slope of Mt. Aso, flows down through the Hazama Hills, flows west through the center of the Kikuka Basin, changes direction south through the Tamana low mountains, passes through the Kikuchi Plain, and empties into Shimabara Bay. It is a first-class river with a length of about 71 kilometers and a drainage area of ​​996 square kilometers. In the upper reaches, which are made of Aso welded tuff, a V-shaped valley up to 100 meters deep with large and small waterfalls is carved, presenting a unique valley beauty. In the Kikuka Basin in the middle reaches, it functions as a water supply source for the agricultural irrigation canals that are laid out like a network, and its abundant flow once developed river ports in Hirose, Takashima (Kikuchi City), and Yamaga, and functioned as an economic artery for the northern part of Johoku. In the lower reaches, a delta plain has developed. Since the development of a waterfront industrial district in front of Nagasu Town in 1973 (Showa 48), the distribution of water from the Kikuchi River has become more diversified. In order to meet the increasing demand for industrial and urban water and to ensure a stable supply, Ryumon Dam was constructed on one of the tributaries, the Hasama River (Kikuchi City), and completed in 2001 (Heisei 13).

熊本県北部を流れる川。阿蘇(あそ)外輪山北西斜面に源を発し、迫間(はざま)丘陵中を流下しながら、菊鹿盆地(きくかぼんち)の中央部を西流、玉名低山地によって流向を南に変えながら菊池平野を経て、島原湾に注ぐ。延長約71キロメートル、流域面積996平方キロメートルの一級河川。阿蘇溶結凝灰岩からなる上流域では、大小の滝をかけた深さ100メートルにも及ぶV字谷を刻み、独特の渓谷美を呈している。中流域の菊鹿盆地では、網の目のように敷設されている農業用水路の給水源として機能するとともに、その流量の豊かさは、かつては広瀬、高島（菊池市）、山鹿(やまが)などに河港を発達させ、城北の経済動脈として機能させたこともあった。下流域には三角州平野を発達させている。1973年（昭和48）長洲(ながす)町地先に臨海工業地区が造成されて以降、菊池川の用水配分も多様化し、増える工業・都市用水の需要とその安定供給化を図るため、支流の一つである迫間川（菊池市）に竜門ダム(りゅうもんだむ)を建設、2001年（平成13）竣工した。
