A former town in Kashima County, eastern Ibaraki Prefecture. The main settlement is Koto Village at the northern end of Kitaura, and in the early modern period it was a transfer point for the transport of goods from Nakaminato to Edo. Melons, strawberries, and tomatoes grown in vinyl greenhouses are abundant here. The Kashima Railway and Kashima Rinkai Railway run through the town. In October 2005, it merged with Asahi Village and Taiyo Village in Kashima County to become a city, Hokota City. Area: 106.47 km2 . Population: 29,211 (2003). 茨城県東部,鹿島郡の旧町。主集落は北浦北端の湖頭集落で,近世には那珂湊(なかみなと)から江戸への物資輸送の積替地であった。ビニルハウスを利用したメロン,イチゴ,トマトの産が多い。鹿島鉄道,鹿島臨海鉄道が通じる。2005年10月,鹿島郡旭村,大洋村と合併し市制,鉾田市となる。106.47km2。2万9211人(2003)。
