…The phenomenon in which the equilibrium of sand drift in the offshore or longshore direction is broken, causing the coastal soil to be lost and the shoreline to recede is called coastal erosion (destruction), and a coast where erosion is occurring is called an eroded coast. The bottom sediments such as sand and gravel that make up the beach are constantly moving due to the action of waves and longshore currents. The phenomenon in which beach sand and gravel are transported by these waves and currents is called sand drift (sand drift can also include blown sand, that is, the transport of beach sand by wind). Sand drift is particularly noticeable from the outer shore to the foreshore, and causes changes in the beach topography and the coastal shoreline. …
