...However, this is not a strict system of official rank equivalence. Its origins lie in the reign of Emperor Tenmu, and it can be assumed that the Asuka Kiyomihara Code, enacted in 689 (the 3rd year of the reign of Jito), stipulated a certain range of correspondences between ranks and a certain number of official positions. The subsequent Taiho Code of 701 (the 1st year of the Taiho era) established a strict system of official rank equivalence, which was carried over to the Yoro Code.
