Vocoder - Vocoder (English spelling)

Vocoder - Vocoder (English spelling)

In a broader sense, it refers to a system that analyzes speech waveform information, breaks it down into sound source and articulatory information, transmits or stores it, and then synthesizes the speech waveform again from them. In a narrower sense, it refers to a system that uses a method of spectrum analysis using a large number of filter groups to analyze and extract the articulatory information. For example, a large number of band-pass filters with different center frequencies are lined up and analyzed, and the output intensity is used as the articulatory information. In its most fundamental form, the excitation output from the sound source of the same filter group is modulated with the articulatory information and then added together to synthesize, and this is called a channel vocoder. The principle of the vocoder is an invention that forms the basis of today's speech synthesis and speech recognition, and was invented in 1939 by Homer Dadley at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the United States.
