...The needles are ground into powder with the leaves and bark of the Machilus tree to make incense sticks, and the wood is also used in powdered incense. It is also widely used as a garden tree, hedge or bonsai, and there are many horticultural varieties, such as Enkou-sugi (Enkou cedar), which has alternating long and short needles on its branches, Yoresugi (Yoresugi), which has twisted needles on its branches, and Ogon-sugi (Ogon cedar), which has golden needles. It is also used as a flower arrangement.

Japanese cedars occupy more than 40% of the planted forest area in Japan, making them the most important tree species, surpassing cypress, pines, larch, and todomatsu.
