Porch (English spelling)

Japanese: ポーチ(英語表記)porch
Porch (English spelling)
An architectural term. Also called a portico. A roofed structure that decorates the entrance to a building and is open on both sides to protect from rain. It can be seen in ancient Egyptian wall paintings, but the famous Greek porch is the Tower of the Winds in Athens. Romanesque examples include the porch of San Zeno Maggiore in Verona (12th century). During the Renaissance, many were in the form of a colonnade, but by the end of the 18th century, simpler forms came to be used in American and British homes, and any roofed protrusion supported by columns came to be called a porch, a term that became synonymous with veranda or piazza.
