...A boat made by hollowing out a tree trunk. It is also called a hollowed-out boat and written as a dokki-bune. It is the most primitive type of boat and is known to have been used all over the world. Originally, it referred to a boat made from a single piece of wood, but the term dugout canoe also includes boats with the front and back made from different pieces of wood joined together. The oldest dugout canoes in Japan were excavated from the Torihama shell mound in Fukui Prefecture and the Kamo site in Chiba Prefecture, both of which date back to the early Jomon period. The former is reported to be 610 cm long and about 60 cm wide, while the latter is 480 cm long and 70 cm wide (estimated), but what both have in common is that the interior depth of the boat is extremely shallow (the maximum interior depth is 20 cm for the former and 15 cm for the latter). ... From [Japanese boat]...One possible solution to this problem would be to cut the hollowed-out boat lengthwise along the midline of the hull (the centerline from bow to stern) and insert planks of the same thickness as the hollowed-out boat between the two, like the gussets of clothing, to widen the boat. As mentioned above, there have been very few excavated examples of hollowed-out boats on the Sea of Japan coast, so no actual examples of this method being used on ancient single- or compound-material hollowed-out boats have been confirmed, but the existence of the above-mentioned method of widening the boat's width, known as "omoki-zukuri" and still used on small fishing boats in various areas along the Sea of Japan coast, is the basis for this theory. "Omoki" refers to the hollowed-out boat section that is divided into two parts, left and right, by an inserted thick plank (called "cho" or "chigiri"). ... *Some of the terminology that refers to "Omoki-zukuri" is listed below. …
