Off Beat Music

...This music originated in the early 20th century from black brass bands in the southern port city of New Orleans. Throughout the 1920s, it spread to northern cities such as Chicago, Kansas City, and New York, and by the late 1930s it was known as swing music and had become popular around the world. Until World War II, it was dance music, but after the war it developed into its own form of appreciation music. Its influence on 20th-century classical and popular music, as well as other arts and culture, is even more significant than the development of jazz itself.
