...After the war, the reading magazine Bungei Shunju (1923) focused on documentaries, publishing feature-length documentaries on the dark side of the occupation, the dark side of conservative politics, and the internal affairs of the Japanese Communist Party, creating a postwar national magazine. Starting in the 1970s, a group of book-like magazines called mooks (a compound word of magazine and book) appeared, following the success of Heibonsha's Bessatsu Taiyo (1972), and they rapidly expanded.

...As a result, many new magazines are created every year, while at the same time many magazines are discontinued, making the practice of scrap-and-build commonplace. In addition, many magazines called mooks (a compound word of magazine and book) have been published, which are produced and sold in magazine format but have similar content and characteristics to books, accelerating the diversification of publishing. In Japan, more than 20,000 different types of magazines are published, as shown in Table 2.
