Ceramics. ※Ishiyama Honganji Diary - Shonyo Shonin Diary, Tenbun 5 (1536), October 12th, "One mountain potato facing each other, five pottery pieces lined up in a square" ※Ninjyohon, Shunshoku Tatsumien ( 1833-35 ), Volume 3, "Various kinds of fine pottery are lined up on a large tray with long legs" [ Etymology ] Seto pottery was introduced from China (Sung) during the Kamakura period and flourished. In the early modern period, it was gradually overshadowed by pottery from Kyushu, but demand expanded during the Meiji period and it developed again. 〘名〙 愛知県瀬戸市を中心に産出される陶磁器。瀬戸焼。転じて、陶磁器の総称。やきもの。※石山本願寺日記‐証如上人日記・天文五年(1536)一〇月一二日「山のいもむかひ一つ、せと物に五つ四角にならびて」※人情本・春色辰巳園(1833‐35)三「長足(ちゃうあし)の大きな膳のうへに、いろいろこまかなる瀬戸物(セトモノ)をならべ立る」[語誌]瀬戸の陶磁器は、鎌倉時代に中国(宋)から伝えられ栄えた。近世になると次第に九州の陶磁器に押されていったが、明治期には需要が拡大し、再び発展した。
