In Japan, the Daruma-sen, Danpei-sen, and Denma-sen have long been used as auxiliary means of transport for short-distance and relay transport, and as warehouse barges, but in the United States, Europe, and the Soviet Union (now Russia), barges have long been used as a major means of transport for inland river transport. Recently, various types of dedicated barges and large barges such as ocean-going barges have been built, and there is also a barge line system using pusher barges combined with push boats.
