A 12th century dynasty in Bengal, India. It arose in the Burdwan region at the end of the 11th century, at the time of the fall of the Pala dynasty, and ruled over most of Bengal for 100 years over three generations, advancing into Bihar, and flourished as the strongest dynasty in eastern India. Its kings were worshippers of Shiva and Vishnu, and it is said that they promoted Hinduism in place of the Pala dynasty's protection of Buddhism, and established social order in Bengal. Poets gathered at the court, and Sanskrit literature flourished. In 1199, the third king, Lakshmanasena, was defeated by the Muslim army led by Bakhtiyar, and Bengal was conquered. His sons continued to resist, based in southeastern Bengal, but were eventually destroyed.
